Upstate New York has been the backdrop for some of the most significant events in American history. From the abolitionist movement to the suffragist campaigns, the region has witnessed the rise of transformative figures, ideas, and institutions. Yet, despite its vital contributions, much of its rich heritage remains in the shadows. This project seeks to restore the prominence of Upstate New York’s historical and cultural impact, giving voice to the people who lived and worked here.
Upstate New York is not only a place of beauty and isolation but also a land steeped in history. Here, vital episodes in American history were written—such as the heroic contributions of the Iroquois Confederacy, the spiritual awakenings of the "Burned-Over District," and the revolutionary strides of local philanthropists. It was in this very region that influential figures like Matilda Joslyn Gage, Susan B. Anthony, and abolitionist John Brown left indelible marks on the nation’s future.
Our project also delves into the rich traditions of the region—its early religious fervor, its contributions to the industrial age, and its ongoing cultural resurgence in the face of modern challenges. Through our work, we strive to humanize the stories of these regions, presenting the lives of everyday people, leaders, and innovators who were once the heartbeat of American society.
Led by Project Director Mary Eberstadt and a dedicated team of researchers, writers, and creatives, Remembering Upstate New York aims to document, restore, and amplify these regional stories. Our work includes on-site research, the publication of essays, and the sharing of local color through multimedia. Our ultimate goal is to foster a renewed sense of pride in the shared history of America, confronting current polarization with positive emphasis on the unifying power of our collective heritage.
We will focus on creating written works that bring these narratives to life and distribute them widely across journals, publications, and educational outlets.
We will extend our storytelling to the stage and screen, bringing these narratives into theaters and public venues for greater outreach.
